Using technology
An increasing number of churches now have access to data projectors and Powerpoint, as well as
sound systems to allow the playing of songs and video clips. Even the use of overhead projectors
can help listeners by adding visual stimulus. Preachers need to be aware that not all (perhaps very few
listeners?) take in information solely by auditory means. Visual material should not be regarded as
only appropriate for the children's talk! Using Powerpoint or other presentation software is an excellent way to add visual impact to sermons.
The people who make up a typical congregation will have different learning styles - some will
be auditory learners and will happily listen to a purely spoken presentation but others will be visual
learners who find it easier to see what the message is through visual stimulus. It is generally
recognised that most people's attention spans are limited (roughly 20 minutes) so supplimenting what
preachers say with other visual means. One approach used in a number of churches, for example, is to type out the bible reading in a
powerpoint so that people can follow the reading on screen - non everyone brings a Bible to church. The sermon itself can be supported with Powerpoint slides, both by writing bullet points to highlight
the various themes and also by using illustrations, cartoons or even video clips to illustrate or
emphasise the points.
