Meet John Bingham

In a paragraph, tell us a bit about yourself

I was brought up in a Christian home in Bangor, Northern Ireland, firstly attending a Brethren fellowship, and later Rosemary Park Baptist Church. I trusted Christ when I was 17 and this marked the commencement of a journey of service for Him. I moved to Glasgow in 1983 for work (I’m an engineer) and have attended Newton Mearns Baptist since 1995. I was actively involved in United Beach Missions for about 20 years, helping with missions at resorts in England, Wales and Ireland. At Newton Mearns I was a deacon for a number of years and currently lead a house group and the Sunday School as well as being a member of the preaching team.

How long have you been a member of SBLPA and what attracted you to join?

I joined SBLPA in January 2010 and simply wanted to be available for service outside as well as inside my home church

How did you first discover your gifts in preaching?

Firstly by helping in various youth groups and then speaking in public during Beach Missions.

What was your most memorable preaching trip?

I remember speaking on Revelation 3 at a little mission hall in Donegal, but probably my abiding memory was the fervency of the prayer meeting before the service rather than anything I said.

In seeking to develop as a preacher – what has your favourite book been so far?

I got a lot of help from reading ‘Papers on Evangelization’ by C H Mackintosh

What advice would you give to another lay preacher starting out?

To speak on any subject you need conviction and passion and to address any congregation you need humility and a burden for their blessing.
